Laundry Renovation - Make it Light
The Brief
A laundry renovation for a weatherboard home in rural Victoria, created within a newly allocated footprint beside the back entry (following a recent bathroom/WC remodel). The goal was a functional utility space with maximum storage, better light, and a layout that feels easy to use day-to-day.
The aesthetic brief: neutral, minimalist, light and airy — with subtle continuity to the adjacent bathroom through patterned feature tile, brushed brass tapware, and warm oak tones.
Must include:
Space for top-loader washing machine
Tall storage
Laundry sink
Maximum storage throughout
Nice to have:
A touch of laundry-friendly décor — so the space feels calm, considered, and genuinely pleasant to be in.
The Redesign
The redesign turns a once awkward utility zone into a calm, functional space — brighter, better organised, and built around generous storage. The brief was “neutral and minimalist,” but with a subtle nod to Morocco: tactile pattern, honeyed brass, and woven texture that feels collected, not themed.
A key move was reconfiguring the laundry, bathroom and WC layout to improve flow and practicality. This allowed for an expanded bathroom footprint, a separate WC, and finally a laundry zone tailored to how the client actually uses the space day to day.
Key decisions:
Budget-smart cabinetry: flat-pack laundry joinery to stay within a strict budget (while still feeling considered).
Moroccan-inspired pattern: repeating the same feature tile — Konya (Perini Tiles) — in a soft neutral Bianco, for that carved/embossed texture without visual noise.
Honey brass thread: matching ABI brushed brass tapware (cross handles to echo the bathroom), then repeating brushed brass in the cabinetry hardware to keep the whole zone speaking the same language.
Warm, lived-in layers: woven storage and artwork to add texture and mood and soften the “utility” feel.
Outcome: a laundry that functions effortlessly, holds the clutter out of sight, and feels like a small room with mood — calm, cohesive, and just a touch Marrakesh.
